Child

This subject is concerned with the following questions:

Who as a matter of law are a child’s parents? What is the nature of the relationship between the parents? Who has parental responsibility and what does it contain? When and why will a court make a parental responsibility order? The subject deals with disputes about exercising parental responsibility and which factors affect the court’s decisions about who exercises those aspects of parental responsibility. In addition it considers what the powers of the court are during private disputes between, for example, the father, mother, grandparents and the child in question's families.

Also covered is the regulation of local authority support for children in need and how the courts exercise their powers to protect children when voluntary arrangements have failed or are inappropriate.
